In 2007, a few friends who were each caring for an aging parent noticed a lack of information online to help them navigate the complexities of caregiving. Not finding the one-stop online resource they needed, they decided to create it themselves. The result was Caring.com.

Caring.com exists to help family caregivers like you make better decisions, save time and money and feel less alone.

Finding memory care facilities near you will be possible if you know what to look for. Keep in mind the following considerations when searching for local memory care communities nearby:

  • Is the care facility specifically for adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease? If not, how skilled are the staff members at handling memory care issues?

  • Are there dementia certified caregivers?

  • What is the staff-to-resident radio?

  • How does the memory care facility prevent wandering?

  • What security measures are in place?

  • Are there special activities and programs for seniors with memory care issues?

  • Is there a special diet for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease?

  • What entertainment options does the memory care facility offer?

  • If your loved one plans on bringing their dog or cat with them, is the memory care facility pet-friendly?

  • Is the memory care independence or assistance focused?

  • Is the memory care facility near me or it’s too far to be able to see my loved one regularly?

  • Is the memory care facility affordable?

Most assisted living communities offer residents the choice of all-inclusive or fee-for-service pricing. All-inclusive means that a single monthly fee covers rent, meals and any additional services a resident chooses such as housekeeping or transportation. Fee-for-service means a resident pays only for those services they use. Typically, if a resident intends to use the full suite of services an assisted living residence offers, it is less expensive to choose the all-inclusive model. If a resident will only require certain services or will use outside assistance for certain services, then the fee-for-service approach offers better cost savings. A more detailed review of assisted living pricing models is available here.
